Professor Yong Liu’s Team Published a Review Article in Progress in Materials Science

Update:2025-12-16

Recently, a review article entitled “Fiber-based materials for multifunctional sound absorption” was published in the internationally renowned journal Progress in Materials Science (Impact Factor: 40.0) by the team led by Professor Yong Liu from the College of Materials Science and Engineering (CMSE), Beijing University of Chemical Technology.

From the perspectives of materials design strategies and industrialization, the paper systematically reviews recent advances in the field of fiber-based sound-absorbing materials, covering diverse aspects including structural design, synthesis and fabrication, and multi-functional extension. Notably, the review pioneers a discussion centered on the integrated design of acoustic, energy, and environmental functionalities, broadening the scope for research in this area.

Acoustic and multi-functional application of the fiber-based materials

Noise pollution has become an increasingly prominent issue, with the rapid global urbanization and industrialization. Owing to low density, high porosity, excellent tunability, flexibility, and processability, fiber-based materials can efficiently scatter sound waves and attenuate acoustic energy, making them important tools for noise control and mitigation.

The article summarizes recent progress in materials design, modification, and manufacturing techniques, highlighting their contributions to broadband sound absorption and energy dissipation. Meanwhile, it also outlines emerging trends in the multifunctionality, industrialization, and sustainability of fiber-based sound-absorbing materials, and provides an assessment and outlook on their development pathways.

This work offers an important reference for research in fiber-based acoustic materials and functional materials, and demonstrates the cutting-edge exploration and research strength in the field of functional materials of CMSE.

The first author of this work is Yuzhe Huang, a Master student at CMSE, Beijing University of Chemical Technology. Professor Yong Liu is the corresponding author. Beijing University of Chemical Technology is the first author affiliation.
